Languages and videogames

As someone who plays a lot of video games, I have had a lot of experience with languages through playing them. Being from Europe and generally playing on European servers to play games, I am regularly playing with people from all over Europe who speak a variety of languages and dialects. I usually play multiplayer games and I believe they are a fantastic way to have first hand conversations with people who have been speaking a different language to you all their lives. While this may appear to be a problem due to not being able to communicate properly, almost everyone I’ve played with has been able to speak at least passable english as their second or third language. Playing regularly with this variety of languages has taught me words and phrases from a number of European languages.

I believe if you want to learn a language, playing games with people who speak it is a fantastic way to learn while also having fun. Many people who you meet also hope to improve their english so it’s very possible to come to a mutual agreement of helping each other in your respective languages, becoming lasting friends in the process. I have little to no experience on other servers as someone who lives in the UK so I’m not sure you can find a similar quantity of variety if you live outside of Europe.
